By Steve Banker. ARC Advisory Group. Industry Trends.

Last week in ARCwire, Adrian Gonzalez wrote about his thoughts on the “Green” supply chain based on chairing a track on "Sustainability: Creating 'Green' Supply Chains" at this year's CSCMP Annual Conference.

he same week, top executives from IBM’s Supply Chain consulting group were in Cambridge, Massachusetts to brief analysts on new developments and initiatives within their group.  One of their initiatives is to develop thought leadership in the Green supply chain area and leverage it to create a practice.  At this point they don’t know if it will turn into a substantial business or not.  They report some industry initiatives are leading CEOs to inquire about this, and some CFOs facing potential carbon reporting requirements are interested, and some operations executives are using their companies’ interest in Green to attempt to get funding for projects they wanted to do anyway.  They admit, however, this is not yet a Board level concern, and that any Green initiatives must trade off lowering their company’s carbon footprint with cost and service issues.
